Overview
Tennis has been part of the Summer Olympics since the first modern Games in 1896. It was dropped after 1924 and returned in 1988. Paris 2024 was played on the clay courts of Roland Garros, where Novak Djokovic and Zheng Qinwen won the singles gold medals. The next Games are in Los Angeles in 2028.
Novak Djokovic's gold in Paris was the one big title missing from his collection, and Andy Murray is the only man to win two Olympic singles golds (2012 and 2016). Rafael Nadal won singles gold in 2008. Zheng Qinwen became the first Chinese player to win an Olympic tennis singles gold.
The Tokyo Games, held in 2021, are listed here as Tokyo 2020 because that is the name of the Games.
How it works
Players are picked by national federations from the world rankings, with a 64-player singles draw for men and women. Matches are played as best-of-three sets, and there are also doubles and mixed doubles medals.
