Overview

The US Open is the fourth and last Grand Slam of the season. It is played on hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, from late August into September, and is known for loud crowds and night sessions in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The first US National Championships were played in 1881 in Newport, Rhode Island. The tournament has been held at Flushing Meadows in New York since 1978, and it became the US Open in 1968. Arthur Ashe Stadium, with about 23,000 seats, is the largest tennis stadium in the world.

In 2026 Alexander Zverev, the top seed, won the men's title by beating eighth seed Ben Shelton in the final, his second major of the year after Roland Garros. Elena Rybakina beat world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the women's final for her third major. Defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka could not keep their titles.

How it works

There are 128 players in each singles draw. Men play best-of-five sets and women best-of-three, on outdoor hard courts. A hard court gives a true, medium-fast bounce, and the late-summer heat and humidity make the tournament very physical.
