Overview

Roland Garros, also called the French Open, is the only Grand Slam played on clay. It takes place at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris from late May to early June, and its slow red surface rewards patient, physical tennis.

The French Championships began in 1891 for members of French clubs and opened to international players in 1925. The stadium, named after the French aviator Roland Garros, was built in 1928 so that France could host the Davis Cup. The event became the French Open in 1968, the first year of the Open Era.

Rafael Nadal won the men's singles title 14 times between 2005 and 2022, the most any player has won at a single Grand Slam. Iga Świątek has won the women's title four times (2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024). In 2026 Alexander Zverev won his first major here, beating Flavio Cobolli in five sets, and 19-year-old Mirra Andreeva won the women's title. Two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz withdrew before the tournament with a wrist injury.

How it works

There are 128 players in each singles draw. Men play best-of-five sets and women best-of-three, on red clay made of crushed brick. The ball bounces higher and slower than on hard courts, so rallies tend to be longer and points are harder to finish.
