Overview
The Championships, Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and the only Grand Slam still played on grass. It is held at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in south-west London from late June into July.
The first Wimbledon was played in 1877. It was an amateur event until the Open Era began in 1968, and it was cancelled in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first time since the Second World War that it was not played. Traditions include the all-white dress code for players, strawberries and cream, and the Royal Box on Centre Court.
Roger Federer holds the men's record of eight singles titles, and Martina Navratilova the women's record of nine. In 2026 Jannik Sinner kept his men's title by beating Alexander Zverev in four sets, and Linda Nosková won the women's title in an all-Czech final against Karolína Muchová.
How it works
There are 128 players in each singles draw. Men play best-of-five sets and women best-of-three. Grass makes the ball skid and stay low, which favours big serves and quick, attacking play. Centre Court and No. 1 Court have roofs, so play can continue in the rain.
