ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000
The biggest tour events outside the Grand Slams: nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments a year.
- First held 2009
- Nine ATP events every year
Overview
The ATP Masters 1000 series is the top level of men's tour events below the Grand Slams, with nine tournaments on hard and clay courts spread across the season. The women's tour has a matching WTA 1000 level. A win is worth 1,000 ranking points on the ATP tour, which is where the name comes from.
The series has carried the Masters 1000 name since 2009. The nine ATP events are: Indian Wells (USA) and Miami (USA) in March and April on hard courts; Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome on clay in April and May; the Canadian Open in Toronto or Montreal and Cincinnati in August on hard courts; Shanghai in October on hard courts; and the Paris Masters indoors in autumn.
Novak Djokovic holds the men's record for Masters 1000 titles. On the women's side, Zheng Qinwen won the 2026 China Open in Beijing, a WTA 1000 event, as a wild card, becoming the first Chinese woman to win that title.
How it works
Each tournament is a knockout event, with best-of-three sets in every round. The top players are expected to enter, so these events attract the strongest fields of the season outside the Grand Slams.
